In this instance, Abaddon used a bottle of what was presumably Crowley's blood to create the sigil. She was then able to use the sigil to return to 2014 with Gavin. In 2014, in order to blackmail Crowley into helping her kill the Winchesters, Abaddon used the Blood Sigil to travel back in time to 1723 Scotland to capture Gavin MacLeod, Crowley's son.
Abaddon somehow managed to follow Henry through time with the same spell. In 1958, when fleeing from Abaddon, Henry Winchester used the Blood Sigil to try to reach his son John in the future but as he was dead by 2013, ended up with his grandsons Sam and Dean Winchester instead.
